Emissions removal projects directly take CO2 out of the atmosphere through nature-based projects or human technology. This can include planting new forests, increasing tropical mangrove cover or using Direct Air Carbon Capture (DACC) facilities. By contrast, emissions avoidance or reduction projects seek to limit or halt sources of emissions into the atmosphere, such as switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy, protecting a forest that would otherwise be cleared, or capturing and utilising methane gas from landfill sites. Both approaches are seen as critical in the global effort to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
