An international treaty on climate change adopted by more than 190 countries in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan. The protocol, which came into force in 2005, operationalized the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and required industrialised nations and countries in transition to limit greenhouse gas emissions according to individual targets.
